As an extension, can be easily done. I have a chat system written in V8 Javascript for my gameserver and it's easy as beans, could port it to a flarum nodejs extension no problem.

Slightly off topic.. but since we are talking about node.js chat, check out http://rocket.chat. Its an open source Slack built using Meteor... the project has a level of excitement and activity similar to that I've seen around Flarum.

Why would you want to introduce NodeJS as an extra requirement for your extension. To me it makes more sense to write extensions using the current technologies already within Flarum.

Flarum has no current requirement on NodeJS.

Also, tarun Rocket Chat looks pretty sweet. :p

HolyPhoenix Because the OP wants a chat system and websockets is the best technology to do that under a nodejs platform. A lot better than relying on 3rd party apps like pusher. Especially when you have to pay $20 a month for 20 concurrent connections. I'd rather run my own nodejs server instead (for free)

When I used phpbb, I used a chatbox mode with used Ajax and javascript, it was real, real time, but you could see user statuses (onlin/idle/busy) etc and it was fairly useful

Up2Vex Umm, after 5 years, this user may not even still be here. I understand your enthusiasm, but bumping a 5 year old thread isn't a good idea - you'd gain more traction starting a new one.
