Yeah it happened to me.
3/31/2017 - enabled an extension that had duplicate css entries, or typo in php caused a 500 error. Switched tabs, disabled the offending extension, saved the day. (Did not have ssh key to server.)
Now I know why the Administration page opens in a new tab. It used to annoy me and now I see,
it truly is a blessing in disguise.

0E800 may I recommend getting phpmyadmin/ some other MySQL manager? That way you can disable an extension if it fully breaks. Also, if an extension breaks the CSS on the main site, you could always manually type in the URL assuming that the duplicate CSS wasn't present on the admin page.

Edit: are you sure CSS caused this problem? PHP sounds like a more likely culprit.

Neither CSS or JS would generate a 500 error.

Maybe it was php typo? I'll try reproducing.

datitisev Possible, but the error is still not made by CSS / JS but the PHP parser. To be technical, CSS / JS will never fail to such an extent that these errors would occure. Only parsing issues that might make your website look and act weird.

The real issue here is the PHP parser that doesn't handle duplicate CSS handlers and fails.
