TorchPE htop doesn't fix the problem. You need to run htop then tell us what it outputs so we can see what's using up your resources.

In theory you have plenty of RAM to install and run Flarum, tho, you use a bit more then expected to just run a Vanilla install without any traffic / active websites. Is this server running anything else atm?

Try

composer self-update

Then re-run the command you used to install Flarum, if it doesn't help, try a quick work-around so we don't have to debug your entire server by installing Flarum the following way.

git clone git@github.com:flarum/flarum.git .
composer install

You need to enable the modules you install

a2enmod php5-gd etc etc

The rest of the errors explains them selfes. Are you sure you should be doing this? But now it is working at least and your original problem is solved! Have fun and happy codin!

TorchPE you just input the prefix you want on the installation page. It's not part of the database setup in MySQL. This is only really necessary if you have multiple applications in a single database (or multiple installs of Flarum).

I would urge you to reconsider, the questions your asking is telling me that you have no business running a board in Alpha (Its not Beta even tho the devs claim it is) mode, your doomed to fail while the board is running just like your failing in the very simple installation process. If you think installing Flarum is hard, try upgrading and maintaining it.

The issue with RAM and flarum isn't that flarum itself uses a lot of ram, but composer installing it does when using the composer update command (or similar installing / removing ones).
Having checked just now (again), it appears composer used up to 261m of ram for php. 51% of your total ram is likely to step on the toes on other processes, especially other ram hungry ones like apache.

This is a issue that has come up frequently before and the solution is to use swap. It's also a appropriate usage of it, as the need for swap is rare (when installing or updating)

Kulga SWAP is only appropriate to use when your 110% certain on what your doing. In this specific case, it's not advice the OP should be given, he is likely to make things worse, not better, over time.

I concur that when making changes to how your system handles higher then expected usages of ram, it is important to know the reasoning why and implications of such a change.
However, it is a solution that has worked well in the past and I don't see any concrete issues with it.

It's true that the OP appears to be fairly new to hosting and flarum. However, considering we were all beginners once, I think a welcoming and helping approach would benefit the OP in the longer term, rather then attempting to dissuade the OP completely from flarum (or hosting a board in general).

There are also several resources available for newbies, such as a install script I wrote for managing flarum installs and Devflarum, a service I provide freely to allow anyone to mess around with the dev-master version of flarum (and extensions).

Kulga I strongly disagree, the fact that the OP seems to know as little as he does, is the exact reason he should not use any Alpha software, but instead, stick to whats stable, known and supported.

I am not trying to scare the OP away from learning, installing Flarum or using Flarum. I am trying to scare him away from running a Flarum board in production mode, which it seems like is his sole intention, we don't even have to guess what will happen or where the OP will be when Beta 7 is out, right back here, on the board, asking basic-should-have-known-before-i-knew-what-flarum-is-and-was questions :=)

@Kyrne My tone might be better, several members and staff has pointed this out already. Tho, I am really not here to make friends, I am here to contribute to, assist and help in any way i can in, what is, so far, an amazing piece of software. If you don't like the way i chose to help you, then that's really not my problem to solve, i stick with the code-issues ?

@Freddy You can build swap, then install Flarum and finally remove swap. Fast and easy process which i'm sure that will do the magic without killing any SSD life cicle ?

I think kulga covered that with his devflarum option. Let's move on, OP is going to make their choice, we can't really stop someone from running Flarum as they choose, only provide resources and alternatives if there's a better solution for doing so. And at the end of the day, if you think someone is making the wrong choice, you're welcome to walk away and let someone else help them out.

I'm glad you werent around so you could tell him "It cant be done on 512MB RAM", you were just proven wrong, and at the same time, proven that not everything you read is true, and most importantly, Google doesnt have all the answers.

Kudos tho! You got mad searching skills. Impressive. If only any of it solved the issue correctly, instead of going overboard on server modifications for a tiny tiny problem.

But hey, if i ever need someone to Google something for me, I know who to call!
