If you have a media / music Forum and your looking for posts that include mp3. Your search result would not yeild any results because the search feature requires atleast 4 chars.

It would be good make it like Quora so users/visitors can find and read most high quality and the relevant answer they are looking for without needing to go through every reply. Think like fb comments, only top comments are up there

Cisco there's already a Best Answer extension

But you mean ordering comments by descending number of likes ? I don't think anybody created an extension for that ?

Hello, is there anything new about this functionality (search within topic)?

    2 years later

I'd like to bump this thread, because Search in one Topic is "must to be" feature. Any suggestion how to realize it?

feodosij great but read my msg first then think if we really need this?

      • In this era of modern websites flarum is modern it looks good and it is fast, but when you will start installing extensions and you will probably need some for moderation so when you will start flarum will also start becoming slower and slower and one time will come it will become heavy and no so much user friendly.
      • Currently we need SEO and there isn't something great as per my info.
Flarum is cool WOW but what about SEO?
In this era we need seo friendly forums that do their work perfectly and do you know one thing that here comes your solution you can implement google search in your default flarum search.
      • Look flarum is good but only it isn't designed in a way you can make a perfect forum with every feature you need, in starting I also installed a lot of extensions I mean I literally installed everything but then I thought that all this is just for looks and all that and my users don't really need it so i decided to remove most of them now I have 7-8 extensions that are useful for me, also you can take example of this forum also see it's smooth cool and perfect just because they are using most of the things from core.
      • At last I want to conclude with that make the developers work on what we really need for this forum software.

username0136 while the Flarum team reads every message under the "Feedback" tag and tries to give feedback/consideration where needed, we expect most of the suggestions will be picked up by community extension developers.

So "putting burden on the developer team" isn't a reason to not make a feature suggestion (or bring it back up with new ideas). All suggestions are welcome and might give ideas to new extension developers discovering the platform.

Also while increasing the number of extensions can have an effect on performance, it's not a reason to stop creating new extensions. Using extensions is exactly the reason why Flarum is fast, because you can include only what you need.

At this time there is still no plan to implement this feature into core itself but this would be a wonderful community extension to have.

I agree regarding SEO importance. For SEO needed like each post:
https://discuss.flarum.org/d/5967-search-on-topic/11 , 12, 13 and etc. - Should be parseble by SE as different pages (Like version for print\Readers view). Content of post put in <meta name="description" content="Content of post"> tag and page should be placed in sitemap. Also content of each post can be displayed for SE in Javascript without needed for render - just text in (non-html) tag page loaded (I'll refresh knowledge about this and post about it later.)

Anyway feature to search in one thread is important because of "Ctrl+F" is not applicable. And to find someones post in interested topic by exact keyword in 1000+ posts looks pretty hard (because needed to read all the stuff.).

Also providing all search work for "Centralized" Search engines with NOT Open sourced algos is not so good idea. We can't implement better features. Its not enough.

It can be something like XML file of whole topic exported... For at least custom "Ctrl+f"
This can be the base of side module worked separate from Flarum with these XML on Javascirpt (That loaded only on users touches search(function) for topic).

        How about this Idea?

With all the respect to Flarum and dev team, forum/community software without topic search in core is like a phone without the ability to save and search phone numbers in contact list, when you have to remember all the numbers and enter them manually each time. On an active forum with medium to big community, the need to search for a specific discussion inside a topic arises constantly and the impossibility of this is very frustrating for users.

But even if we assume that functionality is "extra" which shouldn't be in core, there is no way to solve it with an extension either. At least at the moment I don’t see how this can be done, since working with search is not really documented.

        a year later

What's the situation in the meantime? Is someone working on an extension or is an extension not possible at all?
