How is Flarum different from Discourse and other forums?

Discourse is too complex in settings and its capabilities are too big for small communities.

At this moment in time I can't really decide. Whilst Discourse has many advantages (obviously, has been around longer and has more devs working on it) I love discourses' moderation tools and user management. However, Flarum has a clean modern finish.

ondrejj Flarum could easily become the most popular forum software out there. That’s one major difference.

Discourse looks amazing too, but the problem is, your average person may not be able to install it. Flarum can be tricky too but, at least I can install it even at some of the cheapest shared web hosts out there. Thanks to my indecisiveness, I’ve installed Flarum now at three different web hosts with little to no issues. Since I’m not a developer, just a lover of the web, I couldn’t even tell you how to install a ruby web app. I know there are real developers here that may chuckle at this, because it’s probably easy for them. But, I’m telling you, it’s not easy for your average person who wants to quickly start a nice looking forum for their club, organization, idea, product, etc.

In time, I think Flarum developers will find a way to make Flarum a “1 click” install, no composer needed. Maybe. I’m putting it out there again.🤞Discourse wouldn’t be able to touch it then.

I feel like Flarum hasn’t and hopefully never will forget the “average Joe” who just wants a forum and wants it to look nice and “modern.” And doesn’t want to hire someone to install it. That’s the power of PHP.

Slowly but surely, Flarum is getting there. We're on track for a stable release this year, and a lot of functionality are already available through extensions. With organizations like Fof, those extensions should remain stable and functional. Additionally, as extiverse's extension market develops, extensions will become easier to use and manage

askvortsov I completely agree @askvortsov If anyone research on this forum then @FriendsOfFlarum, @ReFlar and Many other developers, enthusiast has developed many extension which is quite enough to create & run advanced forum.

Heartily thanks to FriendsOfFlarum & ReFlar for their precious contribution to Flarum and Of course to Core Team of Flarum.

I am very much sure within 1-2 years, flarum will grow exponentially.

Initially i too felt there lot of things to develop in Flarum but if you ask yourself about your exact need then Flarum has all that one would need Forum (Advanced Forum) Except strong Private Messaging Feature 🤣

Now only focus we should have is in stabilising Flarum. Rest can go from there

One remark at this point, and the reason I chose Flarum:

It's indefinitely easier to add missing functionality to a light and well designed bare bones piece of software than to remove unnecessary complexity from a software with all bells and whistles baked into the core. In fact, the latter is close to impossible.

When I came to Flarum I realised that one of it's developers is Franz Liedke, a former developer of FluxBB, an older open source forum software well known for its lightness. The decision to shift development efforts to Flarum as a successor to FluxBB baffled me first until I learned about the way Flarum is designed.

And yes, in my opinion, a thoughtful design from the very beginning is a key factor for the lasting success of a software project. Having this in mind, I could easily forgive Flarum its lack of functions and its state of being beta meaning that the design of the software foundation was (and is) still in the process of polishing.

ondrejj It looks and feels mediocre to the user. Flarum already has almost the same number as features as Discord and feels a lot nicer. Within a couple of years it will suppress it.
