Every once in a while there are users in this community asking for the possibility to remove the discussion title from the slug alltogether, e.g. here.

This could be easily achieved by adding one more "transliteration" option in /src/Transliterator.php. What do you think @datitisev?

As Littlegolden mentioned, his solution is not a stable one. You should try to avoid changes to the core files whenever possible. It looks fine now, but it will give you a lot of headaches later.

Coming back to my suggestion earlier to use the Transliterator extension. I asked the maintainer of that extension how to add your goal as a special kind of "transliterator". Here is his answer:

You find extend.php in your flarum folder, you can edit it to your needs without having to worry for the future. Of course you need to install URL Transliterator by FriendsOfFlarum as well.

You added that blank option yourself in your extend.php file, how can there be a translation provided by others?

If you want to see a translation there, you need to provide it yourself. I use my own custom language pack, so it was quite easy for me to add a translation. If I hadn't one already I would probably do without a translation.

Feedback wanted

While testing this extension on Flarum beta 16 I noticed that all my test data was already handled fine by Flarum without any additional extension.

A big change actually happened last year with the release of Flarum beta 12. In that release, Flarum's basic slugger method was replaced with Laravel Str::slug method, which itself uses the to_ascii function of https://github.com/voku/portable-ascii

This means that since Flarum beta 12, FoF Transliterator is probably no longer needed by most of its users.

FriendsOfFlarum has been trying to reduce the number of extensions to maintain by eliminating the least used of them. Based on those observations, FoF Transliterator seems to have become a mostly redundant extension that could be a candidate for end of life.

The extension still receives hundreds of downloads via Packagist, which leads me to wonder if some people are just installing this extension as a placebo, not realizing the default behavior is mostly identical. Unfortunately we don't have enough data to know if those are new forums or just existing forums continuing to update their existing extensions. We also don't have any telemetry to know which of the transliterator options in this extension are most used.

My question then is, does anyone actually benefit from the Behat or PHP transliterators bundled in this extension versus the default portable-ascii now used by Flarum? Do you have example texts or languages that actually require this extension to work?

clarkwinkelmann A complete surprise and as you say a placebo and I think this is the case for most of us, I hope this post will gain a lot of attention. Personally I had no idea about this and considered this extension as a must, after a couple of tests everything seems to be going well at least in my case.

clarkwinkelmann A couple of months ago I installed this extension on my forum because I thought that Serbian Latin letters could not show in the URL and I actually noticed that this extension does nothing because even without it Serbian Latin letters are normally displayed in the URL, which means that for my needs a completely unnecessary extension even though I have those different letters.

Transliterations may differ between languages. In German e.g. umlauts have to be transliterated to the non-umlaut variant plus an e, i.e. ä -> ae, ö -> oe and ü -> ue. Take for example the homepage of the city Köln (Cologne): https://www.koeln.de

In Swedish and Finish however, the ö has to be transliterated to o (see Wikipedia).

Yes, I have Russian forum and all slugs are perfectly transliterated without that extension

We'll wait some time before making any decision to abandon this extension just to be safe.

Since the beta 15 version of the extension still works on beta 16, I think I will intentionally not release a new version. That way it won't appear on Extiverse for now and it will prevent too many people from installing it if they don't really need it. Then anyone checking for an update will visit this discussion and hopefully see the message above.
