peopleinside He's using shared. You really don't need a dedicated CPU to host a flarum site (or much else for that matter) as you're very unlikely to be CPU Bound.

What they call "default" on the website 🙂 we don't get to know how much it is shared unfortunately. Hetzner and DigitalOcean are however (in my experience) very good at balancing resources. The CX21 plan on their website is for the moment more than enough for my web server (some websites + Flarum + MySQL). The load is what comes from having 50-100 online users.

There's also an intermediate step which would be dedicated vCPUs. The hardware would be shared, but CPUs wouldn't be overselled. It's not always clear what providers actually offer, but the price is an indicator

A VPS from IONOS averages around GBP 30.00 post month which is what I pay for mine.

Yes. Very much the case. Mine is totally managed by me only. Not an issue at all as it's what I do for a living anyway.

[deleted] honestly I doubt that. ~$30 a month for 4 vCPU is a cheap price for shared vCPUs, imagine if they were dedicated. Plus they give unlimited traffic, email and what else. They also have a 1 vCPU offer for 1€/2$. There's no way that vCPU is dedicated, that offer wouldn't be sustainable (not with Xeon E5 CPUs for sure).

Also, the website never says that CPUs are dedicated. They write "dedicated SSD" and "dedicated performance". And then they suggest to look at "cloud servers" if looking for a product where "all resources are dedicated". And in fact the pricing for cloud servers are very similar to (actually higher than) the competition.

matteocontrini well, in my contact, the CPU are listed as dedicated. I won't issue my contact here for obvious reasons, but I can assure you they are dedicated. I took this during a sale they had going, and I specifically chose it because of the dedicated resources.

It's never been an issue in terms of speed, throughout, or anything else. It's actually faster than any other host I've used.

matteocontrini they don't now, that's correct. What they are telling you is the truth. However, my VPS is a special deal which is why I'm very reluctant to use anything else. I've been an IONOS customer for years - since the days of 1 & 1 and prior. This is how I got a special customised deal.

I used to have a partner agreement with the legacy 1 & 1 brand via a consultancy role I served some time ago now, and that's how I got this machine.

You say you've "carved it up into VMs" - If you're running VMs on a physical host then by definition it must be running a hypervisor.

I'm happy with DigitalOcean 5$ droplet, is more than enougth to run a medium size Flarum community.
I think that DigitalOcean website is clear enougth, is quite simple compared with most of providers. But maybe offer many products that you don't need and maybe is what seems confusing to the new user.

The other providers i tested was Vultr and Linode. Both are also good, i can't see that you go wrong choosing any of them.

All of them have port 25 blocked by default, so you have to request to support to open it. If you don't open it, SMTP will not work.

Zeokat you sure about that? I'm getting mail outbound from my DO droplet and i havn't asked for any ports top be opened?

Zeokat May I know how many members does your community have? I'm planning on going for the $5 plan but I'm still not very sure if that would be enough, I'm clueless about how much disk space is used often.
