Looking for testers for a Push Notifications extension

I re-tested on another PC, so far it seems like Firefox is not working. Chrome works well, though it did miss a couple of notification 🤔

Haven't had a chance, but does this work on iOS? I don't think PWA works on iOS yet right? Even though I recall reading Safari support web push somewhere 🤷

I would like to make all the default push notifications preferences to be equal to the web notifications preferences, as in already ticked. The user can opt out later if they wish to, but I want all preferences under push notifications to be selected as default for all users.

I wanted to fork this extension for that purpose but how would I do with the 1st 3 which can't be enabled by default.

As much as I'd like that too, there's an issue. Right now, the notification title is generated from the email notification's subject line. This means that support for ANY notification will work out of the box. Switching away from that would mean that I would need to hardcode in a message / translations for each and every notification for each and every extension out there, which isn't really feasible and doesn't scale. One thing I might do is provide support for non-emailable notifications on request, ie if someone has a notification that needs to be supported, I'd add in translation support for it. How would that sound?

Ah that's definitely not good, sorry about that. A few clarification questions so I know what to fix:

Is this the popup alert, or the banner above the notifications menu?
When you say "Once set", which settings are you referring to? Would this be clicking out of the alert (this should prevent the alert from showing up for a week, but indefinitely would be better tbh, as it's easy to configure /change settings from the settings page. I'll switch it to indefinite), or simply navigating to the settings page to see what options are available? (This should also probably hide the alert on subsequent visits). Are users getting the alert once they've clicked "Allow" or "Deny"? And is this happening on the same browser that the user has configured?

askvortsov can you please confirm the behavior of this extension? I am quite sure when I first try it out, it allow me to switch on notification for pretty much anything, but I can't now

I can answer from my experience.

The yellow initial notification on the front page keeps repeating with every page refresh even after the uninterested user close it.

After extensive testing in my community this is (for now) the only issue. Everything else works great and I'm really impressed.

One thing I would like to see is ability to translate "add this forum to the home screen" message and to style it with CSS.

askvortsov Hi - It's the alert banner at the bottom left with "CONFIGURE" written on it. I think if it's dismissed by the user, it should remain that way.

Users are getting the alert even after visiting their profile page to complete settings, and also after they've clicked either "allow" or "deny". It is happening on the same browser that the user has configured.

100% agreed, and fixed. It should stay out of the way once dismissed as of v1.0.1

Added support for likes, will add support for others on request as needed.

Ah hmm, that's a boot order issue. For now, try disabling and enabling the extension. I'll look into making that not a bug. Thanks for letting me know!

Added push notifications, see the dev discussion here: https://discuss.flarum.org/d/24018-looking-for-testers-for-a-push-notifications-extension. This system:

Does not use any external providers, and works directly with the browser push services
Can be enabled by users per-notification-category
Does not require any API keys or subscriptions (and thus scales infinitely)
Is 100% free

To Install:

composer require askvortsov/flarum-pwa:v1.0.1
composer require minishlink/web-push
php flarum migrate
php flarum cache:clear

Please note that you'll also need to install the php web push library (composer require minishlink/web-push) for the push notifications feature to work. PWA will still work without it, but push requires it. The web push library, in turn, requires the PHP gmp extension. This might not be available on some shared hosts, but unfortunately there's nothing I can do about that.

Notes / Thoughts

Please note that push notifications are currently only supported for notifications that support email, and for individual notificaitons that I add support for (currently just likes). If you would like to request support for a notification, please let me know
As hrvoje_hr pointed out, it would be nice to have a customizable add to homescreen prompt. This might be supported on chrome, I will investigate.
At some point this summer, I plan to add a primitive form of offline support. Hence, solving:
