Trouble sending Mail via "mail"

I found a topic to this error here, but it use "smtp" as Mail Driver and i dont want necrobump.

Using mail expects you to have a way for the server to handle the email, this can be sendmail or something else. Can you confirm such a service is installed and running?

Looking at the error trace it seems that php is trying to contact the mail service and it isn't getting a success response. So something on your server isn't working or perhaps a php extension is missing.

luceos Hmm, how can i debug this? Wordpress on the same server has no trouble to send mails.

Bodenhaltung can you confirm that you are using the correct port and encryption type? If you are using tls ( needs to be all lowercase in Flarum's SMTP configuration settings) the port should also be 587 if I'm not mistaken.

Ok, i found my problem, maybe it helps someone, the swiftmailer needs the php function "proc_open", but i had this in my "disable_functions" for security reason...

How did you found out that the issue was that proc_open was in your disabled_functions?
And where is that "disabled_functions" part?
I have the same issue as you, except that I don't know where I could find out if it was because of a disabled proc_open or not.

So I executed this PHP function to know if that function at least existed and it was: function_exists("proc_open").
So I thought I should check at my host providers settings to see if I can find some "disabled_functions" tab.
I found this list:

But as you can see, there's no "proc_open" or similar. But what I do see is that "mailparse" is disabled. Maybe I should enable that one? And maybe others?

yannickp4 if you cannot send email with the mail option you need to check the Flarum error log or enable debug to see what error is thrown exactly. Randomly enabling php options is never a great idea.

Thanks for the idea, but I don't get more information than I already had.
I already looked in the devtools network and console tab.
And I saw through this discussion https://discuss.flarum.org/d/4792-debug-mode that it's actually just adding a "debug" link which throws what's in the network panel.

To be complete, here's what I get in the log file of Flarum. Before having the error I also changed the error_reporting value from "Show all except notices" to "Show all". I have PHP 7.4 but have the possibility to upgrade to 8.1. But I'm waiting to have a stable site before upgrading

Did you had the opportunity to read my reply?

My ugly workaround would be to set the driver to "log" and then execute a job that reads those logs and then send the mails "my" way. But before doing that I wanted to ask if you or someone else could help me further with this issue.

yannickp4 mail relies on the on-system mail capabilities of the server. I don't think there's a way for us to help debug the reason for issues on it, that's really a on-hands devops question. Questions related to this are probably best asked on Stackexchange, sorry to disappoint.

The PHP "mail" function works on my server. Already using it.
Is Flarum using that as well? If it's something else, I can investigate further. Maybe it's related to the PHP version or a library that's not enabled on the server.

yannickp4 Flarum supports many drivers, most used is probably SMTP, but you can configure mail sending services too like mailgun, sendgrid and the likes. Most services support SMTP sending anyway. Using mail should be possible, but if you run into issues with it, it's hard to trace.

It works when I use SMTP. So I can move forward even though it doesn't solve the original issue when using "mail".
