What are your thoughts on the Microsoft event on 24 June?

I personally hope they will fix all issues I have with WSL2. One of the biggest gripes I have is that it corrupts files when I shutdown Windows with Docker still running. So far this has impacted the .git directory of a project with pending changes (requiring me to start from master) and my bash history.

Ralkage Though Windows is slowly becoming a shadow of that even off MacOS, for the typical end user that is.

Quite a few developers that I know are actually gradually moving back to Windows. Macbooks haven't been of great quality for a long time, although the M1 changed that. On the other hand great developer windows laptops are rare; the Dell XPS seems to get bad reviews in my network as well.

I hear people say this a lot, but noone ever seems to explain the issues they have with laptops that are already on the market. I think one of the big issues the the sheer amount of options available: every laptop has its tradeoffs and seeing all the options makes people think that they can't get one that does what they want. I know I definitely had that issue 😛

davwheat My solution to the trade off problem is to always buy ThinkPad, expensive yes, but they literally last forever (I have on laying around here from the 90s that still works) and have all the core features and stuff that I need and/or work needs.

Personally however I'm hoping that Microsoft in general just does a better job of integrating Intune/AzureAD with Windows. Hopefully at some point I can use those as full GPO replacements. Also if they are releasing a Windows 11 I hope it's a free upgrade again.

Macbooks are simply far more superior in their software and hardware (except between 2015 mbp and m1). So developers tend to compare things with that; easy to use, excellent ux/graphics/performance and quality case/hardware..

I'd love a ThinkPad, but I want them to start using the latest Ryzen mobile CPUs first. Lenovo's laptops are always the best in my experience.

I'd assume it would be a free upgrade, especially for home users. They might want to try and charge enterprise customers, though. They said that future versions of Windows would extend upon Windows 10, so I honestly don't think they'll call it Windows 11.

davwheat We have a couple of Laptops we recently purchased that have the latest Ryzen mobile processors (I believe) Notably their E series has them.

Yeah, last time I looked though they were 3000 series, annoyingly, and now that 5000 series is out, they're still on 4000 series.

The battery is pretty underwhelming at 45 Wh. I barely get by a full school day with 91 Wh 😛

davwheat The thing to remember though is that ThinkPads are for business, not consumer, so reliability is way more important than next gen speed or features (at least in the minds of both businesses and manufacturers)

Unfortunately, I’m forced to use a Dell at work. It always has issues. Situations like this are what make people turn to Apple. 😜 And make me ignore Microsoft events.

Linux or bust 🙂 WSL works but it's not quite as good as the real thing. I'm stuck with it at work for the time being on Windows, but I run Fedora at home.

ctml The only issue I have with Linux for enterprise type environments is the lack of things like Group Policies for sysadmins to manage huge collections of machines easily.

tolgaaaltas On ultrawide screens like in my case it will be very comfortable to have the icons centered, cool. Probably what I'm most looking forward to are the tabs in the file explorer, it would be a disappointment if they don't add them.

tankerkiller125 I really agree with this despite the short experience I had as a sysadmin (about 2 years) it's amazing what can be done, I'm curious if maybe there is a Linux distro with this goal, but Windows is really solid in this area.

It was on the case before Chromium-based Edge. They've actually tried tabs in some previous builds under Legacy Edge (Spartan). But they decided to switch to Chromium.
