Install seems OK but almost nothing works

It sounds to me you are using an old msql? What happens when you install on a new database? Do you want the site to run on sub folder or root dir?

I just checked your site. And it's an apache error. You need to check the error logs from apache.

Yes, but my hosting provider doesn't give me any control over what Apache logs. A typical 500-error line from the log is in the previous post:

and I can't tell you any more than that.

I do this on the main site, of course. I'll add it to the forum .htaccess at some point. But for now I'm always visiting https://...

Lots of "200" success codes, but there's no favicon.ico and that (surprisingly) gave a 500 rather than a 404; and then when you tried to log in there was another 500.

jonathanb that looks like the access log, not the error log. Make sure you're looking at the right file

Aaargh, thank you - but there is no other recent file in the logs directory. This is a shared server (cheapskate hosting) and I can't see where to find the error logs. Any ideas welcomed.

jonathanb does your hosting provider have a website? A google search didn't give me a specific one to go to. Usually your hosting provider will have some method to read the error log, if they don't you should create a ticket with them. It might be something very simple, but the only way to find out is by reading that apache error log sadly.
