Berlyn I'm mostly referring to a users 'Display Name', which is usually a default feature; having the option to replace your 'username', with a preferred name within the forum, not the username as a whole itself, if that makes sense? Obviously Flarum momentarily is relatively young, but given the likelihood there'll soon be new members with names similar to already registered users, it doesn't look very pleasing to the eye if someone's username is shown on the discussion post as 'James123' because 'James' is already taken. With this general feature, they'll be able to have it as just 'James' within the discussion posts etc. Of course, someone could potentially add their surname within the username to differentiate (we can't all have the same username, obviously), but they may not want it a part of their 'Display Name' and this allows you to do so.
