miowski animated GIFs are very 90's and don't really have a place in forums today. I can't remember the last forum I visited where GIFs were being used as user avatars

[deleted] You'd be surprised at the features members request. My members (teenagers) want to have a signature & a GIF as their avatar.
danielunited a forum full of animated GIFs is the trigger for me to hit the back button in my browser.
[deleted] It's...
danielunited beauty is in the eye of the beholder...
[deleted] animated GIF's were still widely used and given as a "rewards" for contests (especially on Anime/Manga forums) when I was very active in them in 2006-2016. Though I am not much active as I used to be, when I occasionally visit, I do still see old and new members flaring GIF avatars and signatures
This is also something that varies from forum to forum and from Administrator to Administrator. I still enjoy GIF avatars and signature's but I am now more interested in seeing an alternative format being used and implemented such as webm. Though, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, @miowski was simply replying to a topic that still seems to hold interest to a specific group of Administrators it seems
@danielunited I am most interested in what your members have requested, I like both innovative and older forum features that come from the likes of Vbulletin and XenForo.
I would love to see gif support so i can give my supports a little something too.
Flarum already works with gif profile pictures. But only the hacky way.
danielunited thanks for the advice, but we all have our own ways of communicating and presenting ourselves on the Internet and more specifically on bulletin boards. Additionally, I do not enjoy reading long walls of text and should have probably opted for the reply method so to at least mention what posts I was referring to. Even though it may bother you or other people in what you deem "fuller" or better represented, I have my own preferences as well as I previously stated
Furthermore, this conversation is straying far from the topic and I would prefer if we go back to the topic at hand. Needless to mention that it was necrobumped in the first place
In regard to the topic at hand, I await a brave developer to offer such feature and grace us with an extension of immense magnitude
Ralkage Sorry, I misunderstood your comment. My bad
danielunited no worries I was actually defending you in this case because I do enjoy GIF avatars even though that style is a bit dated. I also added a question in the sense that I was intrigued about what features your members were requesting from you
miowski How I'd love to see this as the default implementation for reaction GIFs/avatars across the entire internet!
I'd love to see a proper GIF avatar implementation for Flarum, and having a hover/disable option for users who don't want them constantly animating would be wise (and a must for me personally).
jordanjay29 I definitely agree ! As @Ralkage said, having pages full of animated images can quickly become a pain for the eyes hovering the mouse to animate the image would definitely be the best way to implement GIFs as profile pics
jordanjay29 Yeah, something like how discord implements the GIF Avatar feature. Only play the GIF when user hovers over the post card; else default to a still image.
Any update on this?
There are many types of forums in use, some are smaller communities with closed member groups. Which means, allowing animated avatars would not be a problem, otherwise the extension should also add a permission for the bio file types.
It would be a nice addon.
Any Update?
I am not aware of anyone working on this.
There is no plan to add animated GIF support in Flarum core since our image resizing library doesn't support resizing animated GIFs. If an alternate library exists, a proposal to switch it is welcome, but this would probably have to wait for Flarum 2.x unless its API is fully compatible with Intervention, the current image library.
You can still manually put a GIF in the avatars
folder and manually update the user avatar path (can also be set to an external, fully qualified URL), but you have to take care of verifying the image size is not too large for performance and does not contain malicious code the webserver might execute.
clarkwinkelmann Thanks for the answer
animated GIF uploaded to /assets/avatars/ folder gets resized and loses animation. So best is to upload a 200x200 or less sized gif (not less than 75x75) manually through ftp and map it to user in database
