Hello. I post my question here, because it seems kinda related, and that it would be weird to create a topic just for that...
I'm also a little concerned by the number of extensions proposed as substitute for what seems like things which could be grouped in a simple option panel (and which makes the interface difficult to navigate in and to use). I understand the philosophy of being light, but my worry is more about the lack of guarantee for the capacity of a forum to exist in the long term with stability.
As a half-newbie on all this, still trying to customize a wanabee forum threw css on freeflarum, I see a lot of extension which seem essential to its functioning. For instance:
- Tags
- BBcodes
- Sticky/Stickiest
- Move post (how you can do any moderation without that?)
- HTML Head Items
- Rich Text...
If any of this becomes suddenly unavailable or stops working well, a lot of things in the existing forum will be totally messed up or unreadable (specially for tags or BBcodes). I just noticed that with "whisper" extension, which also seemed kinda necessary to me (I don't think I ever saw a forum without private message system), and which seems to have stop working well suddenly last year.
So it's a concern for the future of a forum which could grow in time: with none of those things integrated to the core and its updates, how much chances I have to see my forum become suddenly messed up ?
From you experience, how many times a year a big update happens, and what are its chances to mess up with those extensions ?
I'm sorry if the message sounds hostile, that's really not the goal (I understand that all that is complex, that my newbie question must seem naive, and that all that requires a lot of work which is done for free), but after a week working on preparing a forum, I'm worred about those problems, which makes me question the possibility to continue or not on flarum.
