hey guys, what servers with ssh access do you know? I'm looking for that to test flarum 8.0 (when it's ready)

for now, I only know:

Siteground has ssh access with shared hosting. The middle and last plan. That is what I use and it works great.

A2 Hosting has SSH access

BUT!

Whilst I am here, I want to enlighten you and other thread viewers about VPS hosting as it is more suitable for what you want to do which is testing Flarum. It can also save you a LOT of money.

The issue with shared hosting is that it's very expensive for what it offers. At a quick glance, it looks very appealing with all the features that they provide. However, they can also severely limit your access such with things like SSH.

Take siteground for example, their go geek plan is £9.50 / month. This only applies when you buy the yearly package which means you will be spending minimum £120 + upfront. This is not perfect if you want to test Flarum. If you decide to pay monthly, then its £9.50 for the first bill and then £20 every month after that. This is an issue with other shared hosting providers as well.

VPS hosting will tend to your needs better.

VPS hosting is like renting. You are given a dedicated space that you can do whatever you want in contrast to living with room mates (shared hosting).

With VPS hosting you have complete access over your server hence you can use SSH etc.

The biggest advantage is cost. Its billed hourly meaning if you decide that you don't want to run a forum after a couple of days, you only pay for those hours and not for the entire month or even year.

Cloudways is surprisingly affordable, and popular VPS solution that has SSH access.

It comes with 3 day trial period where you can host a fully functional Flarum website without giving your payment details. Its cheapest plan at $10 a month or $0.0139 /hour should you want to continue testing longer.

If you want even cheaper hosting with the same specs, you can try Digital Ocean/Linode/Vultr. Its the unmanaged version of Cloudways hence it's much cheaper whilst offering the same specs. This can be tricky for Linux beginner but there are services such as Runcloud and Server Pilot which give you a control panel to manage your server.

You can also use Free Flarum to have a play around with.

In conclusion, you have many pathways available to test this brilliant software with. However, with this post, I wanted to save you money by giving you viable alternatives.

?

Great explanation. It boils down to the amount of maintenance that is being done for you. Cloudways effectively resells Digital Ocean and adds a basic layer of management (OS patches and upgrades). FreeFlarum otoh isn't really hosting but "software as a service": it tunes everything for a specific application (Flarum) and takes care of the application upgrades and patches itself.

FlarumPower The biggest advantage is cost

This is only true if you don't put a price tag to your own time. Apart from learning how to set things up, who's taking care of critical operating system bugs that surface every few months? When neglected, your site will be either down or hacked sooner or later. Generally, shared hosting plans include all that maintenance.

Sanguine Very valid points regarding time and assistance. Although managing a VPS server has been greatly eased thanks to brilliant services such as Runcloud, Server pilot, Easy Engine , Forge which take care of issues like security and updating.

I've used Hostgator and A2 Hosting. From those I'd recommend A2 Hosting over Hostgator anytime.

Both give you SSH access enough to install Flarum in almost any Shared Hosting.

FlarumPower The issue with shared hosting is that it's very expensive for what it offers. At a quick glance, it looks very appealing with all the features that they provide. However, they can also severely limit your access such with things like SSH.

I can both agree to this and disagree, as not all shared hosting are the same, x10Hosting were doing good things for the first part of last year as well as this year, hopefully, they don't drop close to the end of the year like last year.

FlarumPower +10 in Digital Ocean, I have been using them for about a year now and love it. $10 a month and I get 2 cores, 4gb, 50gb, and I can spin up and toss away things if I want to test them, only get charged for what I use for the test ones, which may be pennies at most when testing things, then you can just throw it away, and I have my main VPS (the $10 a month one) which I don't have to worry about going over that $10, and I can do whatever I want with it pretty much.

Felli I agree with you agreeing and disagreeing, lol. It really just depends on what you intend to get out of it. For me, its 100% vps any day of the week, but my mom wanted a store, so I got her setup with a shared hosting solution. She doesn't want to have to wait for me to be able to fix things for her, or have to always come to me to help, and I don't want to have to do that either, lol. It's much easier for her to have a reasonably priced shared host with good support that can take care of what she needs for her without her having to worry.

        a month later
        8 months later
        a year later

I know this is a quite old discussion, but I couldn't find a more recent one on this topic.

I wanted to report that there's this hosting company that provides SSH access and seems very affordable. I haven't tried it, but someone could find this useful.

        https://www.unoeuro.com/en/

I can recommend Uberspace, they serve me well with my Flarum installation.

They don't put up artificial resource limitations to sell you more expensive packages, instead they let you chose the price and tell you when they see a discrepency between your consumption of ressources and your chosen financial commitment.

Furthermore they don't ask for a long term commitment and the first month is always free, you don't even need to supply your credit card information. Once the month has passed und you like what they offer you send them some money and continue enjoying your hosting.

If anyone wants to test Flarum in a dockerised environment, I am happy to provide resources on our cluster. Please feel free to get in touch if you are interested.

Stablepoint https://stablepoint.com/ allows SSH access in their plans. I've used them before - I only moved as I needed a VPS.

From what I've seen, a lot of companies just resell OVH.
If you want to get a cheap VPS they can probably give you the best price, but of course you won't get a nice interface like most VPS providers.
