  • PM feature of discuss.flarum.org

Now that the extension is ready, why not have it here ?

It's waiting on an is_private database marker that will hopefully be PRed and included in Beta 7. This is necessary to avoid a workaround for handling Private Discussions when Byobu is disabled (the current behavior is that they become public).

I've just woken up so forgive me for not paying attention, but is this a Flarum-built private discussion feature? Or do we still have to get the extension via Byobu?

Prosperous flarum/core1153. It's planned to add a property for posts and discussions so if they have is_private set to 1 they are hidden. This way, extensions can hide discussions & posts easier.

Byobu will use that feature once it gets merged, so when someone disables the extension, all the private discussions aren't made publicly visible.

        Thanks. It's clear now.

But, my question is entirely different. Will this forum have PM ? Not private installations of Flarum.

meetdilip we do not want anything bad happening on the official forums (eg private discussions visible to everyone when updating the forum). Using Byobu on these forums has been revisited a few times, but that has to wait on the aforementioned fix (and as such the new beta) and on a formal approval by the T-Law (aka Toby and/or Franz) ? .

Please also note Byobu is aiming to become a realtime private messaging tool. It will not easily be unmaintained.

I just want to use the PM feature here. Good for sharing things like password, temporary admin account etc.

meetdilip Obligatory don't post your password in plaintext or give it to anyone. In the event something goes wrong, your password is public ?

Kyrne I was referring about cases when we need expert help. It is a common practice to share a temporary admin account details with those willing to help.

For example, Flarum installation service that's being offered through this forum.

Yep, for the moment our go-to alternative suggestion is to use the direct message feature of Gitter. I hoe soon we'll have Byobu installed and can privately message here.
